I get what your saying but I'd rather someone attempt to lob me than a person hitting my feet. The lob is a much harder shot to execute and a lot easier to get back than a half volley at your feet

but the smart returner's partner will also move to the middle if you volley from the middle..right ????

but you are assuming that the server is going directly to the net...Now think on the second serve, maybe you should'nt go straight to net, right?
Yes you are right players should'nt be both in the same lenght on court during the 1st couple balls.
