@wcresponder of course it's illegal. "improper display of tag" or something like that. but if the cop inspects it and finds out you're making it flip down on purpose with a device, not sure what other charges can be added.

if you have time to hit the switch why not just slow down ? i think this would work good intergrated into a radar system so when it detects the threat it automatically folds away

super cool BUT you have to flip it before you go through the intersection. What if you dont realize your in a photo radar intersection? Or in Some cities the cops use incognito vans on the side of the road that take pics.. Cant see those ones coming because they are always changing location
