Sonny's faux pas creates the story line to the movie. His slip tells Sollozzo that there's a disagreement in the family. Sollozzo tries to knock off the Don in the hopes of dealing w/ Sonny. The plot fails and Michael ultimately bumps off Sollozzo as revenge for the attack on his father. Michael becomes the Godfather and 2 sequels follow.

@ratzinator1 The father's attempted murder was because Sollozzo realized there was a difference in opinion between Sonny and The Don concerning the drug business. Sollozzo stupidly tried to get rid of the Don, thinking that he'd then deal w/ the hot-tempered Santino. Michael gets involved in the family business once he gets punked by McCluskey in front of the hospital. He proceeds to blow away Sollozzo and McCluskey over the best veal in the city. He's banished, returns as Don and 2 sequels

Everything that happened afterwards was a result of the Don's attempted murder.  Michael went from outstanding citizen and war hero to a criminal because he protected his father. Santino talked too much as did Fredo and that's what got them killed.

Yeah, that's the size of it - Don Corleone is a business man who protects the weak from the real scumbags. He is a murderer and a criminal, but only when he feels it's necessary - that's what made him great - he has some principles that tried to make his life and his connections as smooth as possible. Drugs was one of the things he didn't do along with refusing to murder someone who raped a girl and beat her up and instead, made sure they just got the crap beat out of them.

this is what allowed sollozzo to order the hit on the don. santino gave away that there was a split in the family with regards to narcotics. sollozzo could kill the don and simply state it was business as he was the only thing preventing sollozzo and tattaglias from starting up their narcotics industry. a war started by the corleones would scar them forever as business for all other families would suffer. they would have to give in and make a deal to prevent war and keep themselves in business.
