The police riot squad (FRU) came from the right and pushed the crowd momentarily to the left. But they regrouped and moved back to their original places in defiance of the FRU (FRU is hidden from view on the right). Then the FRU launched a second wave of attack with water cannons and salvo after salvo of tear gas, followed by arrests. The crowd had no choice but to retreat because of the sting and suffocation from the tear gas.
During this attack, I tried to stay as long as I could, but had to flee when the gas reached me, even at that distance. My eyes sting, I was coughing and my nose running -- so too with all the others who were there. But all quickly recovered after 10 minutes or so. (I discovered that salt is an effective antidote. Some had brought salt to share with others).

This crowd was split into several groups, some running to the left, some to the upper streets, some up the hill behind me. Those who ran left (towards Tung Shin Hospital) were later caught in a sandwich when another FRU unit came from the left. They were mercilessly gassed from both sides, as you can see in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLmS89ZcWtk&feature
See also this video, when they were retreating (FRU at top left of video) before being sandwiched by the other FRU unit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeGy6XmFIw8&feature=related
When sandwiched, the crowd sat down. But they were gassed anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pngtk1eRmk&feature=player_embedded
There was absolutely no reason to gas peaceful protesters. They even chanted "we want peace" and tried to negotiate with the police, but they were attacked with tear gas instead.
With no escape, many ran into Tung Shin Hospital to seek refuge. But they were even attacked at the hospital.
See this related video of the attack in Jalan Pudu in front of Tung Shin Hospital: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgHFI36B4eE&feature=related
and also see this video (actual attack at Tung Shin Hospital, with telephone conversation becoming a commentary): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bie-fT2RiK8 -- man telling his friend in Cantonese: "We are at the hospital...the bastards are shooting tear gas into the hospital...look at them...shooting into the hospital..."
As you can see from the various videos, the violence came from the police, not the protesters who did not throw a single stone. All the people ever wanted was to march peacefully, but this was denied to them. By brute force, the police wanted to disperse them, shooting tear gas indiscriminately, even into a maternity hospital, forcing those who were there to scamper over the fence at the back of the hospital. However, many were arrested. On this day, 1667 peaceful walkers were arrested and detained.
But during the protest, not one stone was thrown. Not one window or street lamp was broken. Not one car was burnt. It was an entirely peaceful protest by the people for a free, clean, and fair electoral process which, until now, is rampant with unfair and fraudulent practices. Any truly democratic government, worth its salt, would not have objected to such a fair demand from its people.
Why is the government objecting and trying to crackdown, clampdown and lockdown KL to prevent the people from protesting? There is only one answer -- because they fear that in a clean election, they will lose power.
=======
Notice anything unusual about this demonstration? Look carefully--WHAT IS MISSING?
Missing are the BANNERS & PLACARDS. Why? Because of the government crackdown, clampdown and lockdown in which anyone so much as wears or possesses a yellow T-shirt is arrested and detained, let alone possessing a banner or placard. On 1st July, the Home Ministry declared Bersih 2.0 an illegal assembly and would arrest anyone linked to it (wearing a yellow T-shirt is considered a link to it and you would be arrested). How ridiculous but that is the reality in the weeks before the rally. Such is the repressive government we have in Malaysia at the moment. Even wearing a yellow T-shirt could get you arrested. The word "BERSIH" has become a dirty word to the authorities. YELLOW has become a dirty color too (it is sufficient evidence to link you to Bersih). Where in the world do we have such a paranoid tyrannical government?
Human rights organizations in the world MUST help Malaysia's NGOs to right the wrongs in Malaysia. They must speak up for us and put pressure on our government to amend election law and practices to conform to international standard. Thank you.
Bersih cintakan keamanan...tp yg buat kecoh saper sebenarnye ...lu pikir la sendiri beb...hehehe
