On December 15, 2007, crowds of people braved the cold and blowing snow to come to Plymouth and watch 1913 2-8-2 steam locomotive Soo Line No. 1003 hauling the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad's "Santa Train".

The old Mike didn't dissapoint, putting on quite a show with clouds of steam and smoke billowing in the cold air as it backed the train north from the depot, then made its big photo runby through town with the whistle howling.

Adding to the attraction was the rarity of trains passing these antique wigwag signals at the intersection of Main and Milwaukee Streets. Since the state of Wisconsin rescued this portion of the line from abandonment by Canadian National in 2005, only about half a dozen trains, none of them revenue, have operated north of the depot in Plymouth.

  • i know right?

  • lol i read you comment at the begging waiting for it to load and was thinking about it the whole time....but by the end i agree!

  • those kids need to shut up.

  • Finally figured out the placement of the wigwags. The one sitting 90 degrees is for traffic that may turn onto the tracks from the T intersection near the track. Great video. Wonder what happened to the bell on the one wigwag. There is a mount for it.

  • A little further downtown, Plymouth's TWO depots still stand. I went to Plymouth in January, Christmas trees were still leaning on the Milwaukee Road depot. The C&NW depot, across the tracks, is now a resturant. Also, a mural of Sheyboygan Electric Railroad & Light Company car # 6 (restored and running at East Troy Electric Railroad) is downtown. The Plymouth Model Railroad Club posts train events on its window, downtown. Thanx fur sharin'!

  • I saw the same train on December 17, 2008! 1003 made an excursion south, through my town, Cedarburg! Thanx fur sharin'!

  • LOL@ santa freezing his ass off
