  • It looks like once they get attacking, they keep going until somebody gets hit. So I have to ask this: would it be effective or ineffective to disengage and then strike from another angle?

  • @Mikraken23 Well thats mainly a case of Pedro being a very aggressive opponent. Disengages are not as common in longsword as say rapier, they are called change throughs and certainly have their place. However, you are muct more vulnerable during a disengage due to the mass and strength of strikes. You are more likely to change lines following a bind or parry, and winding or using a rotation of the wrists (such as a Zwerchau) to change line.

  • @Nikos3000 So I guess the key there would be knowing how to disengage without your opponent striking your weak spots?

  • @Mikraken23 To some degree yes, but often it is simply not realistic as they will drive a hard cut un during the disengage. Changing lines is usually done with a change in guard to maintain a line of defence, or after a parry/bind, as then their force is displaced or disapated.

  • I've been told you can one hand and two hand longswords but I have yet to see one handed. I do believe I've been led astray

  • @Silk7301 Varies on the sword type. You can get 'hand and a half' or 'bastard' swords which can be used one or two handed, but often the term longsword is used those those as well, whereas these true longswords as are shown in the manuals are for two handed use only, though with limited one handed strikes possible.

  • Why no fencing scoring system??

  • @Nikos3000 bastard swords are the best weapon in my opinion. my personal forte. I design swords, and nothing quite compares to the diversity in usefulness of a well made bastard sword.

  • @MrLlamaPro It is usually reffered to as either longsord fencing, or by the masters/lineage style it has been taught from, such as Leichtenauer longsword here (a long lived German tradition), or Fiore Longsword (a similarly popular Italian longsword system)

  • Hey, i'm thinking of taking up sword fighting as a martial art fairly soon. I've done fencing for a while and love it, but it's a sport, and i'd like something more.. traditional on the side.

Anyway, to get to the point, how heavy is a longsword? What kind of build do you need to manage fighting with it?
