The Baku Appeals Court has ruled on 2 proceedings regarding the case of imprisoned Khural newspaper editor-in-chief Avaz Zeynalli. Zeynalli's lawyer Mansum Bayramov told Objective TV that the first proceeding, under the chairmanship of judge Abid Abdinbayov, was held to hear Zeynalli's appeal for the extension of the investigation period. The second was regarding the proposed replacement of his imprisonment with house arrest or conditional bail. Mirpasha Huseynov presided over the second proceeding. Both appeals were denied. Bayramov noted that Zeynalli had filed an additional motion against judge Mirpasha Huseynov, but the motion was denied. The lawyer stated that since Zeynalli poses no public threat, there is no need to extend his pre-trial detention. However, both judges upheld the original court decisions.
On October 28, Nasimi District Court sentenced the editor-in-chief of Khural newspaper Avaz Zeynalli to 3 months of pre-trial detention under charges of extortion by the Anti-Corruption Department. The criminal case is based on a complaint by MP Gular Ahmedova, who claims that the editor extorted money from her. On January 17th, Nasimi District Court decided to extend Avaz Zeynalli's pre-trial detention for 3 more months.
