***** This video is dedicated to Rolande and Wim, two friends who gave unselfishly of their time to help me understand what this song is really about. Thanks to Manuel for finding Wim! *****

"Laat me" was first recorded in 1978 by Ramses Shaffy, a famous Dutch singer and actor. 27 years later, while in a rest home in Amsterdam with a debilitating illness, a band named Alderliefste got Shaffy and his long-time friend, Liesbeth List to re-record the song.
This is the song about a man who is clinging to the life he's had while being fully aware of the uncertainties which lie ahead. He is now pleading for his life; a life which he is desperately trying to reconcile; and, he's pleading to a god who never figured in his life before now. 27 years earlier, Shaffy had, in a sense, foretold that moment in his future.
The lyrics have been included in Dutch and French and are translated in English. The English is not a verbatim translation of the Dutch and French. Instead, it is an effort to represent meaning.
In another notable timeline, Shaffy entered a rest home in 2002, recorded the song in 2005 and died in 2009 at age 76.
Alderliefste released this song (in 2005) as two singles: one being the short version and the other (the one here), the long version.
