@jerrkowa1 Vaughan-Williams would have no need for unconscious premonition of WW2 as he would have extensive nightmare memories of his service as a medical orderly in the trenches of WW1. More then enough. I think that the 6th Symphony has the memory of the Second World War. Of course this my personal opinion.

@pemgolf While Vaughan Williams repeatedly denied it, subjectively it must have been an unconscious premonition of WW2.

You're right; this is a fantastic piece of music. Incidentally, the Oregon Symphony's Carnegie Hall carte, recorded in Oregon immediately prior to flying to NY for their CH concert, has been recorded and is now available on CD. The CD Title is "Music for a Time of War". It has the Ives "Unanswered Question", the Adams "Wound Dresser" (which I think is the heart of the concert), the Britten "Symphonia de Requiem, and finally this Vaughan Williams Symphony No 4.

I correct myself, it's a B-A-H-B motif that is played, the notes being B-Flat, A, B, B-Flat when properly transposed!

This is a complex work that require multiple listening and analysis to be understood and appreciated fully. The main key of F Minor is barely present, even the first movement ends in a distant D flat Major! For a long time I had the misconception that the B-A-C-H motif was present throughout this symphony but it's more a B-A-C-B succession if you considered B flat to be the first of the four notes.

It was written in premonition of WW2

The tension in the beginning is a beautiful disaster. Low brass is amazing

@piano15R I have a tape of this and we were listening to this on the tennis court and the people on the next court asked me to shut it off
Anyone who thinks classical music is boring has not heard this symphony or this movement.

well definitely one of the greatest symphonies ever written. Amazing use of brass. Amazing tonality, or lack there of.
