Honeybees have been dying all over the world at an alarming rate. Some scientists believe that it is the pesticide Clothianidin that is killing them: http://dimensionalbliss.com/2011/03/18/honey-bees-are-dying-all-over-the-glob.... If so, then bees should thrive where no one would dare spray. Like, on our roof. We built a beehive whose design is based on the Langstroth plans that we downloaded from http://www.beesource.com/build-it-yourself/10-frame-langstroth-barry-birkey/. Bought DeWalt power tools from Ashby Lumber: http://www.ashbylumber.com. Bought a queen and some workers from the Marin Bee Company: http://www.marinbeecompany.com. This video shows you how we built our beehive.

  • Love that Horn playing !

  • @giodazip Glad you enjoyed the music :-) The soundtrack consists of two songs: "I Can't Get Started " by Bunny Berrigan and his Orchestra (Victor-36208-A) and "Jumpin' Punkins" by Duke Ellington and his (Victor-27356-B). Bunny Berrigan played trumpet on the former.

  • might i suggest instead of routed grooves try handles from a hardware store cause thoses are going to be heavy where full of honey

  • @Primex007 Great suggestion. I got into beekeeping to just provide habitat for them. I wasn't thinking of the honey or how much it would weigh. Since them, I have learned that local honey can act like a vaccine for local allergies. So, I'll probably be stealing a little of it next spring after my bees have survived the winter.

  • where are the handles to lift the sections

  • @Primex007 I forgot to rout grooves for the handles. Good catch. You probably already noticed some other deviations from the traditional Langstroth plans. I used dovetail joints where they are not required just because I always wanted to make some. The roof section doesn't hold any frames - it's just a rec room that should provide a sanctuary of last resort. The key innovation is the 30-degree bevels on the edges between the levels to keep the wind and rain out.

  • more clearer and comprehensive instructional video on making bee hive. many thanks to uploader JaiUneGuruDeja. I do appreciate your patience and hard work in taking photos and downloading the complete step by step process. Truly a Guro!

I love music by the way!

  • also i would suggest that the handles use 4 screws rather than 2 Cause I read that the Brood Chambers can weigh in over 90 lbs. reason for the 4 screw handle is to make sure that the handles are strong enuff to handle the weight
