HDMI vs DVI quality comparison on LG M227WD-PZ TV monitor 1080p filmed with FZ100

part1: @0:00 view angle HDMI&DVI split screen and each alone see how yours looks at http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/viewing_angle.php (btw thanks lagom.nl)
part2: @0:46 desktop
part3: @1:21 DVI & HDMI closeup
part4: @3:59 clips from The Seeker HDMI+DVI split screen
part5: @5:19 only HDMI part
part6: @6:40 only DVI part
part7: @8:00 monitor (menu) settings for DVI
part8: @8:20 monitor (menu) settings for HDMI
(those were the settings used)

- all content recorded with Panasonic DMC-FZ100 (on a tripod and/or handheld) aimed at an LG Flatron M227WD-PZ LCD monitor(distance between camera and monitor: approx. 120-128cm), with DVI and HDMI connectors from a PC video card Sapphire Vapor-X HD 4870 2048 MB (which has 3 outputs: DVI, HDMI, DSUB)
- videos taken in 1920x1080x50i iA mode, except the movies with The Seeker(first episode) clips those were iso 400(I think), F3.4 E1/30, AF-L, AE-L
- video was recorded as interlaced(by FZ100), but it was deinterlaced by Sony Vegas Pro 10 (description too long...EDIT: I regret not disabling resample thus you may see some blur[was on smart resample])
- cleartype was enabled in windows 7
- monitor and desktop resolution: 1920x1080x60Hz
- there is no audio for this video
- video was rendered as progressive using Sony Vegas Pro 10.0 64bit
- the monitor has 2x HDMI inputs (HDMI1 was tested) and each HDMI has it's own settings (in menu-picture)
- both DVI and HDMI connectors were connected at all times, and ATI was set to duplicate desktop on both outputs (can only duplicate desktop on 2 of the 3 outputs, one must be disabled - ie. can't duplicate or extends desktop on all 3 outputs at the same time, only one 2 of the 3, any 2)
- some images were used from: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test within firefox with F11 key to enter fullscreen also with Full Screen addon to remove top band
- in HDMI, Just Scan makes the desktop look the same size as in DVI's 16:9, but 16:9 in HDMI will zoom in a little, so the edges of desktop are cut out (not shown in video)
own deductions:
- for desktop (ie. text) DVI has better quality than HDMI
- for movies HDMI has better quality
- the monitor is doing extra processing (perhaps the so called XD Engine) when input is from HDMI, and apparently no processing when input is from DVI - hence the text looks perfect with DVI; with HDMI the text has artifacts similar to chromatic aberations (cleartype was enabled; though with cleartype disabled the chromas are not visible near the text though the text seems more pixelated than with DVI - this comparison is not shown in video)

See the original uploaded mp4 file here(approx. 269MB) split in two .rar parts (due to 200MB file limit on mediafire) thus I provide two direct download links:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/z51lc2au9hr7dsa/HDMI%20vs%20DVI%20on%20LG%20M22...
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4jdnmgpai74trw7/HDMI%20vs%20DVI%20on%20LG%20M22...
Note that inside the rar archives the file is an .mp4 and the monitor type is mistyped as W227WD instead of M227WD, sorry about that (I corrected the other typos here, but don't want to reupload the RARs again with fixed contents)

The Seeker clips format:

  • hey guys, look, I was trying to let you decide which (dvi or hdmi) fits better for you; but just to state the obvious: when feeding a signal on the HDMI input on some monitors (like LG M227WD-PZ TV monitor I used) [this means it can even come out from your DVI, as long as it goes in the HDMI input of the monitor) will cause the monitor to execute additional post processing (like enhance colors, make it more eye candy [done by XD Engine inside the monitor]) - this is good for movies; bad for text.

  • How can my dvi monitor show how good a hdmi monitor is? Question.

  • DVI = HDMI . DVI = VIDEO SIGNAL . HDMI = VIDEO SIGNAL + SOUND

  • @ProtoDimensions I found out why, certain TV's or monitors have a limit to how high it will allow a VGA cable to output, or it can be a cable, but I got the same result with different cables. It doesn't bother me anyway as the quality of the display is perfect :)

  • @coolcar100 Change out your VGA cable. i had the same problem. changed out the cable and had perfect 1080.

  • DVI and HDMI transmit the signals digitally the same. The only different is that HDMI can provide audio on top of video.

If you are looking for just a monitor HDMI = DVI.

  • look he made a grapics lower so that you can think it is stupid here is the thing DVI and HDMI are the same HD!!!!!!!!

  • DVI is exactly the same as HDMI the only diffrence is that HDMI carries Audio and DVI does not... (you need another audio cable for that)

  • HDMI with this TV makes everything look fuzzy and shit. i use DVI and never looked back seeing as i only use this monitor for my media/gaming PC and the picture looks clear and crisp.

i'm not saying HDMI is shit, its just i have never seen a picture look crisp and clear with one it just looks really rough and horrible in my experience DVI/VGA are better.

  • @Bossmagnum1 HDMI

  • Can anyone tell me what's better for gaming on ps3? HDMI or the other one?

  • My HDTV (1080p) is my main screen for many purposes. But for some reason I can't get 1080p through VGA, yet there are videos where people are using VGA and have 1080p. My native display I am getting is 1360x768, my graphics card is a GT520, can someone please tell me why it's not working?

  • SET YOUR BACKGROUND AS A BLACK WALLPAPER. LOOK HOW BLACK IT IS WITH DVI... NOW SWAP YOUR MONITOR TO HDMI... LOOK HOW GREY IT IS.
