iPhoto is really slow when you edit photos. You'd better go with Picasa. Nevertheless, Gimp is a powerful and lite application that lets you create cool effects. You need to learn how to use it, but it's worth it.

Here you can see we created smoke, an "Apple Mirror " effect, an aluminum-brushed button and a caricature smile.
