I think the Dad is just a step dad or boyfriend. The mother is all over her son; hugs and kisses abound. The Dad just shakes his hand. Maybe they aren't that close. I dunno. ?
I completely agree w/ you about the new one. I remember seeing this one a few years ago once, and I was pleasantly (very) surprised, after not having seen it on TV in a very long time. It would be great if they'd restore it and play it again. The new one is a pretty lame redux, and like some of the people said below, kind of weird.
