Burmese villagers are fleeing to the Thai border after fighting broke out between the Burmese army and ethnic Karen rebels. No casualties have been reported.

More than 1,000 Burmese refugees crossed to Thailand's town of Mae Sot on Sunday, after fighting broke out again between ethnic minority Karen rebels and Burmese government troops.

Refugees took boats to cross the Moei River to seek for temporary shelter at the Thai border.

The fight erupted in the Burmese town of Myawaddy. So far there is no report of injuries.

The first attack by the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army started on November 8, a day after elections were held in Burma.

There is often sporadic fighting in Burma's ethnic regions. But the recent clashes appear to be a breakaway faction of the government's Karen army opposed to the election.
