AWOL But Not Underground: VC2

Michael William joined the National Guard because he needed the money. His recruiter told him that he could be an interpreter or a cook, and that he wouldn't go to war. Michael joined only to learn that recruiters earn commissions for their work, and he felt that he had been conned, and even coerced, into joining. Once in the military he was told that he would be assigned to Iraq as a machine gunner. That was when he decided to flee the military and live underground.

I don't even like the whole concept of AWOL. If I quit my job as a teacher, I would not be arrested. It's just a stupid policy. Being a soldier is a job, just like anything else is, they shouldn't get special positive or negative treatment because of wanting a new job.

If the government does not want to attract those who do not want to fight, they should stop bribing people to join.

Everyone makes AWOL's out to be horrible people, but they are not. Every AWOL case is different but even if they person is not against the war but just feel they made a huge mistake, the Army SHOULD work with these people, but sadly do not. The only option left for them is to go AWOL. This guy is the real hero in my opinion, it took more courage to leave than to deploy.

He shouldnt have joined the Army during a time when the country is indulging in two separate wars. I'm surprised he expected them to be honest with him. A recruiter is there to get you from the small leased office to the big battlefield. No one should expect anything less.
