"Do you see how they roll?"
Recorded at Steely Dan's performance at the Canandaigua Musical Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY on July 23, 2011.
Got a feeling I've been here before
Watching as you cross the killing floor
You know you'll have to pay it all
You'll pay today or pay tomorrow
You fasten up your beaded gown
Then you try to tie me down
Do you work it out one by one
Or played in combination
You throw out your gold teeth
Do you see how they roll
I have seen your iron and your brass
Can't you see it shine behind the glass
Your fortune is your roving eye
Your mouth and legs
Your gift for the runaround
Torture is the main attraction
I don't need that kind of action
You don't have to dance for me
I've seen your dance before
Do you throw out your gold teeth
Do you see how they roll

Tobacco they grow in Peking
In the Year of the Locust
You'll see a sad thing
Even Cathy Berberian knows
There's one roulade she can't sing
Dumb luck my friend
Won't suck me in this time

Got a feeling I've been here before
Won't you let me help you find the door
All you got to do is use
Your silver shoes
A gift for the runaround
Use your knack darlin'
Take one step back darlin'
There ain't nothing in Chicago
For a monkey woman to do
Do you throw out your gold teeth
Do you see how they roll

  • I cannot tell you how much good it did my heart when they pulled this one out, so slinky and sophisticated with the classic SD sting in its tail. Never thought I'd hear this one live.

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I have at least one live version of every song Don and Walt have played on tour since 1993 and was REALLY hoping they'd finally play this live. Very, very cool.

  • Is there a hint of Horace Silver somewhere between 5:00 and 5:40?

  • I think I heard this song at Fox Theater Detroit on July 16 2011

  • They opened with this number in St Paul (after the instrumental opener)

  • They've never done the following songs live: From Can't Buy A Thrill: Kings, Only A Fool Would Say That, Fire In The Hole, Change Of The Guard and Turn That Heartbeat Over Again. From Countdown to Ecstasy: King Of The World or Barrytown (since the '70s). From Pretzel Logic: Through With Buzz, With A Gun or

Charlie Freak. From KL: Rose Darling, Your Gold Teeth II, Any World That I'm Welcome To or Throw Back the Little Ones. From EMG: Negative Girl, Blues Beach, Green Book, or Pixeleen.

  • @RevGuitarzilla79 There are many songs from the SD catalog, that they've yet to perform live. True Companion and Here at The Western World are not among them. They did True Companion as the show opener during their 1994 tour and Here At The Western World during the Fagen Band solo tours of 2006. I'm a hardcore fan as well.

  • Arguably the greatest SD song. Sure wish they would do King of the World Live. I think Count Down to Ecstasy is the litmus test for hard core SD fans. If you are a real SD fan you really appreciate this album. It might be your favorite.

  • i was already pissed they skipped my state for this tour but seeing that they play this and "the bear" on this tour made it worse. guess i'll just have to wait for a bootleg of this tour like "caves".

  • Sounds a bit like Zappa's 1972 band (and this is a compliment). Glad they are performing this after all these years! Great song!

  • Excellent quality! What did you use for this? Thanks for the post!
