A tutorial on flashing strobe light problems with an Olympus DSLR. This is the E-520 but I've heard about it happening on all Olympus E series cameras.

Just a recap, avoid S-AF, and redeye reduction.

  • Hey :)

I got a Olympus E 400 and I can't get my flash to work at all.. no matter what mode I choose the icon remains "blue" while every other settings is white. It's like it doesn't even know it got a flash haha.

Do you know what the problem might be?

  • @metally6 Pop up the flash. The E-400 is an older model that might not pop up on it's own. Press the lightning bolt button near the flash and it should fire according to the settings on which you have set it.

  • it's preflash every camera does that, you can turn it off in menu :)

  • @JoZeF3D A ha! Thank you! No more fucking pulses of light before taking the shot and having people think you have taken it when you haven't!

  • This is not a problem at all. The redeye reduction flash will always be like that.

and try doing the SAF thing in bright environments and that will not happen, that only happens because you're in a dark environment, even if there is an ambient light, that room is still dark, CAF changes focus every time you half press the shutter release button but you pressed it instantly so there's no blinking flash.

  • @eyenkayrpznt Yep, I forgot to mention the focusing bit in here. I really like Olympus too. While everyone barks back and forth about Canon and Nikon, we get to sit back and have great cameras, no barking requiered. I've heard the original founder of Olympus once said "making cameras like everybody else is boring."

Actually, I have seen this problem numerous times. It strobes to auto focus and do red eye, when set in the mode described - I have seen it flash 8 or 10 times to take a picture. Annoys people like crazy, and you can never take a quick shot. If you adjust the settings, it will do a quick preflash, perform the focus and eliminate the red eye problem. It is good advice on the settings. In the long run, I love this camera, great optics and lenses.

  • This was no any help for me. My flash stopped working at all, but it is not destroyed, something is in the settings.
