That was me -- I did a full archaeological and botanical survey before choosing the route, preserving all rare, threatened and endangered plants, cutting and moving trees to use as house posts, and moving anything else out of the way. In fact this area was only settled once before in the 1970s and was abandoned due to volcanic eruption. While early Hawaiians harvested from the forest, it likely wasn't at this higher elevation and there is no evidence of their presence.
