Muslims meet Mormons

Profanity, racism, and bigotry comments will be removed. REXBURG - An Egyption family spoke to BYU-Idaho students tonight, sharing their culture and religious beliefs. The University is trying to teach a Rexburg community that is highly dominated by Latter-day Saints to have an understanding of the Middle East.

"When I am around Mormons, I feel like I'm around Muslims almost. Not just like we both don't drink alcochol," said Khaled Rashad.

While Mormons have Family Home Evening on Mondays, Muslims use Friday the same way.

"I learned... Never judge people as one group, even if they belong to the same belief system or same country. Everyone has their own unique experiences," said Samar Shata.

"People have all sorts of ideas what Muslims are like, or Arabs are like having never met them before," said BYU-I Professor Matthew Whoolery.

I asked, "Do you think in a community that is (predominantly) LDS that its important to learn about Muslims?"

"Definitely, definitely, definitely, cultural awareness is definitely important," answered BYU-I Freshman William Lane.

And while there is a mis-conception that all Muslims are terrorists there is an equal false hood that all Middle Easterners hate Americans

"In all my years in the Middle, where I traveled around in the Middle East, I really never once had anything bad of me because I was an American or say something bad to me because I was an American," said Whoolery.

So while Egyptians eat beans for breakfast, and Americans eat a full rack of ribs for a meal, both of which are unheard of in the others culture, everyone seems to agree that learning about each other is important.

Professor Whoolery met the Egyptian family while teaching at a Cairo University, and got Brigham Young University Idaho to agree to fly them in for his "World Ideologies in Conflict" class.

:o Islam explicitly prohibits racism as all Muslims are equal before God. During the holy pilgrimage of Hajj all pilgrims from every race and nation are indistinguishable from each other, worshipping in the same row to the same God.

@amina70angel The LDS Church is firm against racism, so I have no idea where you're going with this. We believe in the literal gathering of the Twelve Tribes of Israel - which have nothing to do with race.

Islam was in Spain for 400+ years. Majority of Spanish "Culture" comes from Islam.

Infact, the Muslims who initially took over Spain saved the native Spanish from the ruler who had been abusing the people there before their arrival. The Kingdoms of Aragon and Castille destroyed a peaceful co-existence between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. The #1 Jewish philosopher came from the Spanish Caliphate by the name of "Maimonedes". During the Reqonquista...both Muslims and Jews were slaughtered.

One of the reasons why Americans don't marry Europeans often has to do with the difference between American and European morality. Americans have more in common with Muslims because they are both religious people. In Europe XXX movies are common for regular TV, however in America it is not shown. You can't find Nudity in the USA in public places and media. BTW Catholic Nuns and Orthodox Jews use "veils", the tradition of the "Hijab" comes from Judaism and Christianity.

@snowwolf7777 what the heck dude i am black and even i do understand the meaning of the change during that 1978. i question that when the mormon came to my house cuz lots of my black or dark friends even my white friends told me bout that comment. but i ask the two missionaries. they simply answer "they don't know but only GOD knows!" plus Black ppl was being hated by all american! maybe they lord feels that all people in the America's weren't ready for that kind change!
