Space astronomy missions take many years to prepare. But there comes a time when the spacecraft is practically ready and managers and scientists look forward to the launch and the start of observations.
ESA's next major scientific missions; HERSCHEL and PLANCK, have now reached that stage and the two spacecrafts are preparing for an ARIANE 5 launch early next year. This video outlines the two missions which will both probe the invisible far infrared and microwave Universe. It includes interviews with their project manager Thomas Passvogel and project scientists Göran Pilbratt and Jan Tauber, and new 3D animations of the spacecraft.
