Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon lead students today at the United Nations International School (UNIS) in "standing up" as part of the global campaign "Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!"
Ban told students that the United Nations (UN) had made a great deal of progress on getting more children into schools, especially girls and fighting disease.
But he added that many nations still needed help and that economic crisis had made it more difficult for the one billion people who still go to bed hungry every night.
The Secretary-General asked the children to join him in crouching down and at the count of three, stood up against poverty.
Ban also met with children from earlier grades and read the, Stand Up Against Poverty preamble together.
Millions of citizens around the world are expected to take part in events over the next three days to call on their leaders to meet their commitments to end poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
