"What's the harm?" (of religion)

The first clip is from the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment - March 25th 2009. Congressman John Shimkus (R-Il.) puts all of our minds at ease about climate change. We don't need to worry about it. Why? Because God said he wouldn't flood the world again in Genesis.

Clip #2 is U.S. Congressman Paul Broun (R-GA) speaking yesterday to an audience in Georgia, expressing his disagreement with the unifying scientific consensus in astronomy and biology. Since his arrival in Congress, he has been appointed to the House Committee on Natural Resources, and currently serves as Chairman of the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee for the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

The ideas that these men hold can lead to real harm, especially to future generations who fail to get a quality science education.

Your understanding of science is abysmal. Science is defined as, wait for it... using the Scientific Method to help understand the world around us. Faith is not used by the 95%-ers to supplant science. Were you home schooled? What other science have you selectively denied? HIV causing AIDs? How about smoking and lung cancer?

Maybe we should also deny chemistry and go back to alchemy? How about throwing out astronomy for astrology? The genome is probably also bunk, huh?

It's not your fault that your teachers were unqualified, but you can't use that excuse into adulthood. Try an online course in biology. Evolution is a fact as well a theory.

If a person uses the Scientific Method (like Mendel did) in his quest for truth, that is science. Note the lack of protest by the so-called 'anti-science Christians' against thermodynamics, plane geometry, or even heavier-than-air flight.

If a person disregards the Scientific Method and touts person 'beliefs' as science (like Darwin did), he is a hack and a fraud who should be disavowed by any intellectually honest person - even if you support his 'beliefs.'
