Requiem for a Cream
A study of the hip hop montage, by David R Burnett.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Hollywood movie Requiem for a Dream is the filming style and more explicitly the quick cuts known as the hip hop montage that Darren Aronofsky, the director, uses in Requiem as well as many of his other films. In this piece I am questioning what makes this technique tick. Much like Douglas Gordons 24 Hour Psycho, I have taken this montage and taken it apart piece by piece, slowed it down and sped it up, turned it backwards, and replaced the subject matter (white powder, white liquid, almost the same thing). The end result is there before you, but the question remains. What makes the hip hop montage tick.
