Katie Niemeyer, a 1988 Barnes-Jewish Hospital burn unit patient, traveled from Austin, Texas, to show gratitude to four dedicated nurses who saved her life when she developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and still work in the burn unit at Barnes-Jewish today.

"I cried at my desk at work when I read the e-mail saying I would get to see my nurses who cared for me," says Niemeyer, who was inspired by the great care she received at BJH to become a nurse and finished her nursing degree from Barnes College of Nursing in 1994 (now known as the Goldfarb School of Nursing). Watch as Katie reconnects with her nurses and gets the opportunity to thank them for the full life she is able to live as a wife, mother, and nurse.

If you have a special nurse or department you would like to honor, consider giving them gift in "tribute" that will benefit patient care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Call the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation tribute line at: (314) 286-0445, or visit us at: https://www.barnesjewish.org/online-giving-form/

  • Hi Katie, I too am a SJS survivor. I know you will be a remarkable nurse because you know first hand what is like to be in the mercy of others. Take care! Wish you all the best!
