This Tips&Tricks for Resident Evil 2 explain how to access the "Phantom Gate".
Basically, grab at least ONE item, kill the 2 zombies in the garden and then, you can access the Phantom Gate.
If you step outside of it and want to re-enter it, just go inside the Main Hall of the RPD and go back to the Phantom Gate.

imacwesker: just a minor nitpick :). You can also get the phantom gate *without* taking an item prior to reaching the police station. The *only* thing of importance is killing the two Zombies inside the courtyard.

In the retail version, if you don't take any items, you first need to kill Zombie Brad, and then exit/reenter the area to get the two Zombies. Kill them, and the phantom gate is yours.

The above was tested and verified in both the PAL demo and PAL retail version.

Really? I thought you need to take an item so the 2 zombies will happear... I mean, I thought either you kill the 2 zombies and get the phantom gate or you kill Brad but I never thought you could achieve both... Amazing tip, I nee to test it! :-)

No problem mate :). I should also add that in the retail version, while verifying, I did not pick up anything - I knifed Brad and the two Zombies and still got the phantom gate.

Summarising, to get the phantom gate without picking anything up:

Demo: kill the two courtyard Zombies

Retail: kill Zombie Brad in the courtyard, leave/enter the area, then kill the two courtyard Zombies

PS: would you consider the semi-hidden camera angles in the RPD Library an astuce, too?

Shoot. I just remembered that I can't properly tape PAL games so I can't make the video.

However, you can try to spot them yourself. Enter the RPD library through the double doors, then move the player character to his or her right, towards some racks filled with books (so not towards the desk with the red Herb). There, you will probably find two screens which you never noticed before...

When I have time, I'll make a little video :). There are two camera angles in the RPD Library which you are unlikely see because you are never given the urge to actually go there. I discovered one of them years ago, then recently found out there was another one. One of those "Dang, and I thought I had seen everything in the game" moments :). It's a bit similar to the semi-hidden area in the Akropolis Tower park in Parasite Eve 2.
