Northrop Grumman, the $33 billion corporation that owns Avondale, Ingalls and Newport News Shipbuilding, says shipbuilding is just not as profitable as they would like. They want to dump Avondale and its workers, take a big tax break and walk away. In the process, they'll be killing 5,000 jobs in New Orleans and another 7,000 in Pascagoula Mississippi.
What happens to those workers?
Ten years ago, Avondale Shipyard was the most dangerous, lowest paid shipyard in America—today it is one of the safest, with middle class wages and benefits. Ten years ago Avondale's workers earned their first union contract.
Avondale's 5,000 workers are tough and determined. They endured a nine-year struggle to win their union. Five years ago, along with the rest of the Gulf Coast, they survived Katrina. Last year, they lived through the nightmare of the BP oil spill. Today, they are fighting to save their shipyard and they've got the entire Gulf Coast community behind them.
Save our Shipyards. Save Avondale.
Where are their jobs being shipped too, Mexico? The goods have to be coming into the country from some place, right?
The fight against BP is far from over, just because our sad ass media doesn't cover it anymore doesn't mean nothing is happening!
