STEM is the integration and cross-fertilization of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. At the K-12 level, the technology and engineering aspect of STEM focuses intentionally on analysis and design. Both simulation and modeling are central to this focus. To support this STEM emphasis, the new Common Core Standards in mathematics have raised mathematical modeling to the level of a major curriculum strand for high school, on the same level as algebra and geometry. PLATO is committed to addressing the need for modeling in math and science through active learning and the use of modern tools.
