"What is an illegal immigrant" is an ethnographic research project that looks at "common senses" surrounding the phrase "illegal immigrant." The purpose of this project not to survey public opinion, but to actually understand why people believe what they believe. Our hypothesis is that "subjective" opinions are socially shaped and that our media has played a role in this process. Each interviewee was asked three questions: When you here the phrase "illegal immigrant" what comes to mind? -- How would you describe the typical deportee? -- How do you know this to be true?
