In this video I will show you how to attach a microphone as well as lights, HDMI Monitors or any other item using a Hot Shoe to a GoPro camera.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Do you know if there is anyway to connect a usb microphone to the hero 2?

  • @OskyATL most USB mics draw power from the USB port. The GoPro (to my knowledge) wont operate a USB mic. Now, If you had internal power( batteries) and then a configuration of 3.5mm to USB adapters, it may work. No guarantees.

  • What is the size of the hole that you drilled for the microphone? Should I drill a hole just slightly bigger than the jack? Thanks!

  • @CyclingWorks This iw where you want to take a look at the cable you will most likely use. I bored the hole just a tiny bit bigger then the cable. this allows there not to be any play in the cable and the stress of the cable is placed on the case, not the actual internals. Look at if you will most likely use a Right angle or straight Plug. I bored just slightly larger then the 1/4". after i drilled the 1/4" i used a Dremel to smooth it out to just the right fit.

  • quick question, with that setup and the camera being on 1080p widest FOV, does the camera show the mic protruding into view of the video?

  • @anotherLPfan Depending on your microphone barrel length, sometimes it can creep into frame. After playing with the positioning of the microphone and camera, I got a clear frame. I havent tried any of the other FOV's and resolutions simply because I set it up initially and havent had any issues with it. The mic i used was a short 3inch mic. Let me know what you come up with.

  • i have the lcd bacpac and it just tears through my battery ;p

  • How does it sound? Perhaps a demo video?

  • @evanshowler I'd love to hear some testing footage from the shotgun mic. I don't want to spend a lot on a microphone but I do want to get moderately good inexpensive audio and I'm thinking that might be the way to go.. Maybe not the Radio Shack special, but a ~$30 or less mic.

  • In the 720p/60fps mode on the hero 2, does it film in 170 degree FOV?
