(Extended version:) "You see, money doesn't exist in the 24th Century"
What role will money play in the world of the future? Here's an often-cited scene from the film "Star Trek - First Contact" that suggests what might be possible once we transcend our preoccupations with money.

  • To the people who want to nit-pick at one episode or another, remember, Star Trek is a TV show, with episodes written over the years by many, many different writers. There are bound to be some inconsistencies. But I think the overall theme is clear -- and is well stated by the Picard character in the above film clip. (That's why I posted it in the first place)

I appreciate your enthusiasm and comments in any case!

  • "Quark charged people for drinks and use of his holosuites"

In the DS9 episode, It's Only a Paper Moon, Captain Sisko simply glared at Quark and made that greedy bastard pay for Nog's holosuite time, since it was therapeutic.

In the DS9 episode, Bar Association, Captain Sisko reminded Quark of how he pays NO rent and of all the times Chief O'Brien has fixed his shit for FREE ...

NO, motherfucker, when push comes to shove, Quark's greed was always put below -- FAR below -- the greater good.

  • REPLICATOR hands down what we need in this world

  • 4:07 I'm pretty sure we already have that technology, but she seems really thrown by it. D'oh! ;-)

  • They've said that many times on TNG and DS9 but clearly it's not true. Even in the first episode of TNG they show members of the crew buying things, and on DS9 Quark charged people for drinks and use of his holosuites. The Federation must use Latinum as it's one of few substances that can't be replicated.

  • @catbuffalo Thanks! For someone usually accused of being an introvert, that's a compliment!

  • bmillerbiop sounds enthusiastic lol

  • @bmillerbiop Correct. Money just serves as a reminder to most people what they don't have enough of(a sign of greed).

  • @ddd82451 The irony is that today, things - including money - only take on value by their *scarcity*. The resources, knowledge, and technology exist now for everyone to have a decent quality of life. But running everything through a debt-based money system ensures that some can hoard vast amounts, to the detriment of the whole system.

Money serves two opposing functions - medium of exchange and store of value. We're hurting because too much is being used for the latter, starving econ activity.

  • @bmillerbiop I just wanted to inform you that the economy in this clip is called "post scarcity." Replicators(Star Trek): can produce virtually any form of matter, as long as its not complex organisms(like humans). Replicators eliminate material scarcity, and within the federation: war and poverty have been eliminated. World hunger: history Homelessness:History. Money: Obsolete, the only reason money exists is because of scarcity.
