Returning from "The Ghost of a Rose" is Sara Frison who reprises her role of Rose, the ghost girl whose memories haunted that of Michael. This time she is joined by writer/director Matthew Gardiner, who plays Dani, the insane and loosely unstable schizophrenic who's delusion's from reality are growing worse and worse everyday. The story focuses on Rose, and Dani, and their separate encounters with the grim reaper of humans souls. Rose seeks to join Death, while Dani wishes to disassociate himself from all that he knows to be evil...
ORIGINS: February 2008. "Swansong for the Reaper" is the result you get when you decide to book gear, assemble a cast and crew, and shoot something completely on the spot and without a script or storyboards to guide you along the way. I'd drawn a picture of a man looking into a mirror, but instead of his own reflection staring back at him, he was facing the angel of death himself, and for some idiotic reason I'd thought that this would be enough inspiration to make a movie happen. Unfortunately, I was wrong, as I discovered on the first day of shooting when we set up for the original opening scene of Sara and Death playing chess at the table and I gave the order to improvise. Nobody knew if were doing a comedy, a horror film, an action film, etc. and nobody knew what direction to take it. I believe we shot some extra footage at the table that didn't make it into the film except for a quick shot in memory montage - and now all of that footage is unfortunately lost to time. All in all not exactly the best way to shoot a movie.
Later that night at around 3 in the morning, when I was completely alone and the only one awake, I set up the camera and recorded the scene where my character who I later named Dani (after Dani Lloyd Davey from Cradle of Filth because of the British accent) spoke face to face with the reaper in the mirror. There was a minor mishap and none of the audio was recorded so I had to reshoot that scene that following day. I'd also gotten out other costumes and filmed the extra bits at the end of the film where Dani goes crazy and sees multiple versions of himself in the mirror before his natural reflective reappears. This was the only time there was any scripted dialogue in the whole movie. And that was it, the movie was done, and we had the entire thing in the can.
Then came time for the editing process. There wasn't really much of a story to begin with, and now it was up to me to try and create one so audiences would get it. Since Sara had already played the role of Rose the Ghost Girl in my previous film, I'd conceived the idea of "Swansong" being a sequel to "The Ghost of a Rose." In the original film we didn't know how long she'd been, how she died, or what her spirit was going through in the afterlife prior to being rejoined with Che's character Michael. So I cut together a scene out of Sara's improvised dialogue, with the idea in mind that she was playing the same character from the previous film, and we were seeing apart of her life as a ghost this time around. But what about my character? Dani? There was a script I wrote around this time titled "The Death of a Rose" and it was set before the events of "The Ghost of a Rose" as a prequel that would've revealed to us how Rose died, how Michael ended up with Alicia's character Stacy, who my character Dani was, and how he was tied to everything that had happened. "The Death of a Rose" was never produced however mostly due to scheduling conflicts with the cast and crew, although hopefully the possibility that it could happen still exists.
The new director's cut of "Swansong for the Reaper" includes never before seen alternate ending, two new scenes adding depth to Dani's character, brand new opening and closing credits, and a recap of the events from "The Ghost of a Rose."
