Jón Páll Sigmarsson and Geoff Capes battled for the title World Strongest Man for a few years. They were two good friends off the field but on the field they were animals.

Their first battle was in 1983 in Christchurch in New Zealand when Jón Páll joined the competition for the World Strongest Man. Geoff had never won but he had gotten 4th, 3rd and 2nd place.

Geoff won in 1983 but Jón Páll finished in 2nd place after a big battle against Capes.

Here we can see the competitors in the deadlift.

Competitors in WSM 1983:
Geoff Capes (Britain), Jón Páll Sigmarsson (Iceland), Simon Wulfse (Netherlands), Tom Magee (Canada), John Gamble (USA), Chris Okonkwo (Nigeria), Doyle Kennedy (USA) and Allen Gallberg (Canada)

  • @tubaSHANK its easier the more the bar bends because that means you are lifting the full weight until you are much closer to lockout than you would be with a rigid bar

  • @slickjan88 before strongman geoff wass not a powerlifer he was a shot put champ so its amazing he done this and if you watch the whole episode of 83 wsm geoff himself says it was 300 more than he ever deadlifted

  • 893 pounds.....300 pounds more than hes ever deadlifted??? where the hell did the announcer pull that fact from? haha

  • tom magee is the strongest

  • If it would be easier why was Tom the only one that did it?

  • It's actually harder the more the bar bends takes longer to lift the weight off the ground instead of right away with a stiff bar.

  • You put 1180 lbs on any bar it's going to bend

  • @OoShinkooO

actually by the bar bending, it actually distributes the load more, making it easier to deadlift, a bar that wouldnt bend would require them to deadlift all of the weight off the start, whereas when the bar bends there never deadlifting all of the weight until it is completely off the ground and by that point they are at a much stronger advantage lever wise. stiff bars are much much harder to deadlift

  • deadliftin' cheese LOL

  • Thanks for uploading! I was surprised to see these here, it's been a long time.
