Passing Strange, which is currently nominated for 7 Tony Awards, recently celebrated its 100th performance at the Belasco Theatre. The show, which is nominated for Best Musical, has also been a celebrity hot spot as of late. Samuel L Jackson, Terrence McNally, Angela Davis (aunt of Passing Strange actress Eisa Davis), Toni Morrison, Rosie O'Donnell, Lauren Bacall and Harry Belafonte have all been spotted at the show.
Passing Strange was developed in part by the Sundance Institute. Coincidently, Sundance will be bringing their film festival to Brooklyn for the third year in a row. The showcase will feature 12 documentaries, 10 feature films and 36 short films from the 2008 festival. The Sundance Institute will be in residence at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) through June 8. Check BAM.org/Sundance for more details.
The Damon Runyan Cancer Research Foundation offers a service where members can purchase premium seats to Broadway shows and support cancer research at the same time. Theaters allocate a handful of their best seats, which the Foundation then sells for double the face value. The difference is a tax deductible donation to the Cancer Research Foundation. The program, which was started by Rodgers and Hammerstein, was closely backed by Bob Hope and Marlene Dietrich in their prime. Go to DamonRunyon.org for more info.
Three-time Tony Award winner Frank Langella has signed on to play Sir Thomas More in the first Broadway revival of Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons presented by the Roundabout Theatre Company. The production will begin previews September 12 and opens October 7 at the American Airlines Theatre. A Man For All Seasons is directed by Doug Hughes.
