When my wifes mother died recently we got a condolence card with a poem on it called The Rose Beyond the Wall. What struck me about this was it invocation of a particular metaphor of death and dying (indeed living) which characterised it a space separate from the space of life, with this separation marked by an opaque and insurmountable wall. To me this seems to be mobilising the same metaphorical schema that George Spencer Brown uses in his primary algebra (The Laws of Form), which uses this basic concept of a distinction creating two spaces separated by a value and with a particular logic drawn from the entailments of the overall metaphor. I suspect that this common metaphor underpinning both our understanding of life and death and our understanding of (some) maths originates in phenomenologically realised embodied experience.

  • A rose once grew where all could see, Sheltered beside a garden wall, And, as the days passed swiftly by, It spread its branches, straight and tall. One day, a beam of light shone through A crevice that had opened wide- The rose bent gently toward its warmth Then passed beyond to the other side. Now, you who deeply feel its loss, Be comforted - the rose blooms there- It's beauty even greater now, Nurtured by God's own loving care.
  • That's the one. Many thanks.
