This morning, the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee held a forum to highlight the urgent need for comprehensive health insurance reform. Chairman David Obey asks Professor Jacob Hacker to "unconfuse" him:

Rep. Obey: Is Medicare a public program?
Hacker: Yes
Rep. Obey: Is Medicaid a public program?
Hacker: Yes
Rep. Obey: Is our Veterans health care system a government system?
Hacker: Yes.
Rep. Obey: Is the NIH which does the research on health care in this country, are they a government or a private operation.
Hacker: Students would very much like this test. Yes. They are governmental.
Rep. Obey: Well, i thought they were. What about SCHIP? Is that a government program?
Hacker: It is. I mean, it is administered at times by private carriers and there are private plans, but yes, it is a government program.
Rep. Obey: Well, thank you for unconfusing me.

  • bahgn,

Could you please point out where in the constitution or bill of rights we have a

" fundamental and inalienable human right to health care" or did you make that up?

Nothing is more wasteful than any government administered anything.

Medicare is bankrupting the people of this country.

  • Treating health care as a business rather than as a profession and an essential service by allowing private, for-profit insurance companies is bankrupting the people of this country. By siphoning off money into private profit, the current private "system" is far more wasteful than any government administered health care payment. The result is that we spend a lot more on health care and get a lot less. That is a moral outrage against the fundamental and inalienable human right to health care.

  • The problem is the level of care in the government systems are bankrupting the country. Huge, waste-full, fraud and corruption government run anything is why we cannot allow this takeover.

  • good job obey won lol so whats the problem lol
