This is a Fox 5 news report about the police standoff that ended last night. I do not own this video it is property of Fox news.

Full story from the Fox website:
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Police say a man who had barricaded himself inside an Alexandria townhouse after and injuring a woman during an apparent domestic dispute shot himself late Thursday, bringing an end to the situation.

Alexandria police spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt says the woman was shot about 11 a.m. in the Cameron Station neighborhood and was taken to the hospital.

The woman who was shot is in serious condition at the hospital. Police say she was in her car in a garage and actually backed through the closed garage door in an effort to get away from the gunman.

Police say this was a domestic situation. They had been negotiating with the man via telephone and were hoping to end the standoff peacefully. But, shots were heard at about 11 p.m.

There was a 2-year-old child in the home at the time of the shooting. Police were able to get the little girl out. An older child who lives there was not home at the time of the shooting.

Hours after the barricade first began, Alexandria Police were keeping part of the Cameron Station neighborhood on lockdown Thursday night.

"Time is on our side in these situations," said Deputy Chief Blaine Corle of the Alexandria Police Department. "Our goal is to resolve these things peacefully, so we will stay as long as it takes and use all the resources we can to accomplish that."

Police aren't releasing names and relationships, but they are calling the situation domestic.

Police had closed down several streets in the neighborhood as a precaution while officers attempted to get the man out of the home safely. Some residents along Waple Lane were still out of their homes late Thursday. A temporary shelter was set up at a nearby elementary school to accommodate them.

Folks in the neighborhood say they are not accustomed to police activity, but the police were there all day long on Thursday.

Neighbors tell FOX 5 the suspect and the victim are in business together, and that they own the neighborhood coffee shop.
