Learn how host review & hosting comparison sites work. Hosting ratings are seldom ranked by web hosting features. Hosting reviews rate web hosting companies by the commissions they offer. Hosts that pay more get the BEST HOST rating.

The absolute worst offender, in my opinion, is WEBHOSTINGSTUFF.COM. Not only do they have their own "buy-your-way-to-the-top" TOP-10 list, they also accept customer reviews regarding other web hosting companies... NEGATIVE REVIEWS, that is.

Over the past months, I've watched how WebHostingStuff.com has systematically deleted POSITIVE reviews of specific web hosting companies and retained the NEGATIVE reviews.

Hosting reviews seldom base their "rating" on quality of service (although many claim to).

Instead, most of them rate a webhost based on the *size* of the affiliate commission. The web hosts paying the highest commissions usually get the top spots.

It's a well-known fact: hosting companies that use Commission Junction to run their affiliate programs offer among the highest affiliate payouts in the hosting industry.

Thus "clever" PPC (pay per click) affiliate marketers decided: Why not create a hosting review site and list the highest paying companies at TOP and "recommend" them? Ka-ching!

  • Good Video with thoughtful information. I also think there are numerous other 'ideas' web hosts have engineered to gain advantage. I have nothing against affiliates whatsoever, in fact, if they didn't promote goods and services, our chances of finding some things that we do like like would be minuscule given the number of web sites now on the internet.

As with everything, nothing replaces due diligence and common sense :-)

  • @Pusso1 I have no problem myself with affiliates, I do have a problem with a trying make people buy under the perception of a review. My only problem with affiliate commissions is when they take a large percentage of a sale or more then a sale.

  • Keep exposing the Frauds!

  • Great job!

  • @reviewsexposed OK, I agree that some "reviews" are certainly not kosher. If it is an honest review with some serious flaws of a product highlighted fairly, then a good review is helpful. But as you suggest, most reviews are barely concealed "buy me now" type hype.

  • interesting video ! Thank you for sharing .

  • Thanks for the video, most of these sites don't pass the stink test, and this confirms it!

So now that we know the problem, what is the solution? Where can we get unbiased site host reviews? CNet, for example, gives information on the plans, but not any actual reviews. Maybe I should just punt and use godaddy... The whole process is quite frustrating.

  • you need to watch out for is people who review products. Some of these are getting money through affiliate programs. I used a product lately and did not find it useful. The website said there were no user reviews but they rated the product 5 stars. I went back and wrote a comment on the problem I had with the product and they would not post it. For that reason I do not trust top 10 review. I don't know if they get kick backs from reviews but would they not post my review?
