Quick introduction to melodic modulation when taking dictation. (With some reminders about other things to keep in mind when taking melodic dictation.)

For practice, please use the textbook's website, and do the drills in section 12A:

  • I'm not in your class! Ha ha! And I was kicked out of my Music class on the first day because I couldn't read Musical Notation, even though I got straight A's for all 3 years before then!

So I'm far from classically trained! But I believe that the melody you are playing subsumes a 12/4 Time Signature.

Your Videos are really interesting, Thank you for the time & effort you put into them.

  • @therealKINDLE Thanks for joining us!

I should have realized when I recorded this that even people not in the class can go to the website and use the textbook software... The link is above. You need the latest version of Shockwave installed to use it.

  • @therealKINDLE Also, the time signature could be a number of things, depending on the note value you chose for the beat, and what you'd like to say about the melody. 12/4 would certainly work, but I'd probably choose 6/8, given the tempo and contour of the melody, and then notate the first three beats as dotted eighth, sixteenth, eighth.

There's probably a whole lot more to be said about choosing meters, so perhaps I'll do a video about it at some point!

  • When I hear the first part of that melody, all I can think of is Deck the Halls and it totally throws me from the rest of it... >_<

  • @songandsound Oh yes please! I would certainly like that! And if there is any way you can make the /* part more easy to understand, I would be SO grateful! It's easy understanding it when you're in 4/4, but recently I was in 11/8 & I just got totally lost! And don't get me started on The [Original] Terminator Theme! Maybe you could tell me what on earth it's in! But I'm told it's a phasing Polyrhythm of 13:8? :O I have so much to learn. But your Videos are so helpful :) Thank you

  • @songandsound I see, Because 6/8 can fit into 12/4 four times right? Or am I wrong! Gosh! Delia Derbyshire once articulated that Music is a form of Mathematics, but I never knew it could be so literal! See, I thought that you find where the melody sections (or Rhythm) start, & end; & count up to that point, to find the meter. Hence why I gave 12! But I see what you mean now about that first note defining the value for the rest. :) By the way, I hope you don't mind me joining in.
