Iraqi journalist Ghaith Abdul-Ahad on his meetings with the Taliban in south eastern Afghanistan (December 2008). He describes the Taliban's distinct separation from Al Qaida and the Taliban's organised structure in comparison to Iraqi insurgent groups. The photographs of the Taliban were taken by Ghaith Abdul-Ahad (December 2008).

Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, 33, is an Iraqi journalist, a writer for The Guardian and a photographer for Getty Images. He photographed and wrote from behind the insurgent lines in Falluja and amongst the Shia militia in Najaf as well as covering the daily violence in Baghdad, Iraqi elections and investigating jihadi networks in Syria and Jordan. He is one of the few successful Iraqi journalists in Western journalism, and one of the few journalists who still ventures across sectarian lines in an effort to cover the conflict from all sides.

  • the only way to win in afghanistan is to spend money there and to channel the billions from the puppet government to local people, the puppet government are all thieves. we all know u can't defeat taliban or afghans by fighting it will grow with more fighting we all can clearly see dat after 9 years of occupation. so... stop thinking stupid. think like a human being.

  • Listen at 1:42 it just tells that American puppet Karzai govt and US invasion is as unpopular and unwelcomed in Afghanistan as it was in Iraq...and US will get defeated in Afghanistan as Russian got defeated there...though US for it's NWO agenda is trying to do propeganda of AlQaida and threat to world from Afghanistan and Pakistan..but this interview reveals that it's just Afghans war against US terrorist invasion of their country and they have every right to do so..Long live Islam..

  • I have heard that people in Afghan Govt: cooperates with people in Pakistani Government in kidnapping Western people, taking away cargo carrying good for NATO and many more anti NATO activities.

  • Yes, very sincere government in Afghanistan is required. The present rulers are busy in making money. They are not sincere in taking Afghanistan out of this mess.

  • what's the 'army from the east'.?

  • thanx i really appreciate you defending us like that :)

  • nice interview. nice pictorial representation.

they cannot be defeated as they are the fact.

  • If ISAF doesn't defeat the Taliban it would increase my perception that they could be the 'army from the east'.
