  • it seems to me like his SIB is a communication technique. When he's bored or wants to do something new, he hits himself but it isn't as severe as when he's in pain or sick. bored hitting is more repetitive "can we do something" but pain or illness he's really nailing himself. Is it like that a lot?

  • @queenfan45 Yes, it's definately communication related, however once he starts, he can get "stuck" and can't stop himself, so it's a mix of hyperarousal, communication, frustration, compulsion, etc....I just so wish we could get him to a point where he could at least say a word or touch a picture. He occasionally touches a prompt, but then gets angry if you don't give food fast enough and starts punching head...we have to find herbs,etc..to help with impulse control

  • have you had a sensory profile done?

    he could be self regulating.

  • @GT2582 Yes, he's had sensory profile done. He's tactile defensive, at times, other times, he wants tactile input. He's also got gustatory issues ie...on warm days only eats colder foods, on rainy or colder days, only wants mostly "warm foods" with a crunch. He is also obessed with chewing his "chew necklace" (rep cord band) and flaps his fingers a lot and hums incessantly, as seen here. We've been giving green tea lately, seems to help a bit, at least sometimes, with the humming

  • I know this may sound totally bizzare, but I had a dream last night and I saw you and your son there. I was walking next to your house and you both were standing outside, in your backyard just walking with a dog.

  • @sidandmoi That's interesting. I suppose all of us who are dealing with children in autism spectrum are "connected" in some ways...

  • Im very Grateful that you made these videos. My son is 4 severly autistic as well. His behavours are identical to your son. Its very hard to watch our children hurt themselves. When i try to restrain my son from punching himself in the face he tries to bite me and pull my hair! does jamie have the sleep problems? I noticed he wasnt in a special needs bed? How do you keep him in his bed? Does jamie hurt you ever?

  • you are so great... my son is 17 and almost looks exactly like jayme.... his behaviors are almost identical, i also have a son who is 20 with mild autism .... it is a struggle considering i also have multiple sclerosis and arthritis.... God is great ..... Joey is a gift as all of my children are. Don't know what i'd do without them :) God Bless you...

  • how come he didnt get free "novacane' from beck? (novacaine) He's useless anyway. Might as well just make him a giant robot.

  • It's very hard to stop echolalia. My son (PDD NOS) used to do it alot when he was younger. He hardly does it now, but not because I told him to. I used to, but it didn't help. It was a part of him. But once he learned to speak he did it less and less. Still he sometimes he repeats phrases from TV.
