Guitarist Scott Wolf stopped by the shop and we thought it would be fun to try the same piece on a bunch of guitars. This is Dowland's 'A Fancy.'

  • Hey - We use a Sony PCM D50 recorder for the audio and a Flip camera for the video. We do add reverb to some videos, though not all, and these videos with Scott Wolf do have reverb - as it's a quiet piece we mic'ed the guitar pretty close and didn't get as much of the room as we might have. It's a pretty live room, and I really try to just get as close as I can to what I remember hearing in the room.

  • @Lennyevansdavis This requires detective work. Sherlock Holmes, are you here?

  • In bar 8 (28 seconds in) where Scott is barring on the 2nd fret, he is playing an A sharp which is also in the sheet music. Assuming the capo is the nut, the only place to hit an A sharp is the third fret on the G string or the eigth fret on the D string. If you watch and listen, he clearly plays an A sharp but does not finger it on either the G or the D string. If anyone knows what is going on I'd love to know how this is possible. Perhaps he has his guitar tuned differently??? Cheers.

  • Good job with the micing.

  • amazing beuatiful tone

  • Try sarge gerbode #6...lute tab.

  • To say Dowland music is beautiful is an understatement. Scott's playing is mesmerizing. Modern guitar made lute music way too lush. Anyone knows how to identify which "A Fancy" is this? or know what transcription used here? I'd love to get this from a sheet music store

  • Which Vowinkel model is this?

  • I agree this guitar has it all-beautiful separation without having a dry sound. He plays it and it responds with warmth and richness. Well-performed! Well-made instrument! Bravo

  • @nvguitarguy Agree. It has the brightness of the other spruces but with a better warmth and the low end seems to sound a little better.

  • The Volwinkel seems like a clear winner in this contest. Much sweeter top end.
