BBC NEWS AT TEN: Osama Bin Laden's death - On the day when Osama bin Laden was killed - May 2, 2011

The trail that led to Osama bin Laden began before 9/11, before the terror attacks that brought the son of a Saudi construction magnate to prominence. The chase grew more urgent last fall, when U.S. intelligence discovered an elaborate compound in Pakistan, a clue that eventually culminated in Sunday's raid on a fortified and isolated fortress in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.

Details of the hunt for and killing of the 54-year-old bin Laden were still being assembled Monday, but briefings by senior White House and CIA officials filled in some gaps in the account of the investigation and death of the world's most-wanted terrorist.

U.S. intelligence officials were aware of bin Laden's growing radicalism before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and began assembling a dossier on him.

"From the time that we first recognized bin Laden as a threat, the U.S. gathered information on people in bin Laden's circle, including his personal couriers," a senior official in the Obama administration said in a background briefing from the White House early Monday.

After the Sept. 11, attacks, "detainees gave us information on couriers. One courier in particular had our constant attention. Detainees gave us his nom de guerre, his pseudonym, and also identified this man as one of the few couriers trusted by bin Laden."

وتسابقت وكالات الأنباء في محاولات محمومة للكشف عن مزيد من تفاصيل العملية التي وصفها مراقبون عسكريون بأنها كانت "غاية في الجرأة" من جانب وحدة تضم افرادا من فريق نخبة متخصص في مكافحة الإرهاب ويتبع البحرية الأمريكية.

ودعت منظمة الشرطة الدولية "الانتربول" إلى إلتزام مزيد من الحذر وأكدت أن مقتل بن لادن لا يعني استئصال شأفة تنظيم القاعدة أو التنظيمات التابعة له.

وحسما لما أثير من شكوك حول التأكد من هوية الشخص الذي قتل في العملية أعلن مسؤول أمريكي اليوم إن النتائج الأولية لتحليلات الحامض النووي تظهر "تطابقا كبيرا بدرجة من الوثوق تصل إلى 99.9 في المائة" في أن أن الشخص الذي قتل في باكستان هو أسامة بن لادن.

وكان الرئيس الامريكي باراك اوباما قد أعلن في كلمة متلفزة بثت ليلة الاحد ان بن لادن اضغط هنا قد قتل في عملية عسكرية نفذتها وحدة كوماندوز أمريكية خاصة الليلة الماضية .

وقال الرئيس الامريكي أنه امر بتنفيذ مهمة عسكرية ضد مجمع سكني في بلدة إيبت آباد خارج اسلام آباد اسفرت عن مقتل بن لادن، وان العملية نفذت من قبل عناصر من القوات الخاصة الامريكية ، ولم تسفر عن وقوع خسائر بين القوات الأمريكية المهاجمة.

واكد الرئيس اوباما انه أحيط علما في أغسطس آب الماضي بالمكان الذي يوجود فيه بن لادن في باكستان، وأن جهودا استخباراتية بذلت بأكبر قدر من السرية منذ ذلك الوقت للتأكد من تلك المعلومة .

وقال إن العملية، التي تم فيها تبادل لاطلاق النار، لم تسفر عن سقوط خسائر في صفوف المدنيين.
