Shadow Company is a part of the United States Army. You can see that they wear ACU in black and they have the American flag patch and a patch that identifies what unit they are from. Plus LT. Gen. Shepard has a thing for the Spade of Ace and that is his signiture symbol. But this is only a company sized unit (80-200 soldiers) but this special unit could be connected to the 75th Ranger Regiment which was under control by Lt. Gen. Shepard. So these guys are just handpicked Army Rangers by Shepard.

On the crates in Hotel Bravo on the level "Just Like Old Times", there is an emblem with a "rook" chess piece, lightning bolts and the words UMBRA CATERVAE written on it, which is Latin for Shadow Company. No symbol like this exists in the US military adding to the possibility that they are mercenaries... plus they are the first and only singleplayer enemies in the Call of Duty series that are American

Shadow Company arn't mercanaries, they are a goverment Black Ops team. On S.S.D.D when you go to Corporal Dunn about running the pitt, he says "the best runners have a chance to be in some special ops , if thats your thing" Plus I don't think a PMC could afford Pavelows, tanks, and that high tech gear because on the level "just like old times" on the highway across the river you see Shadow Company escorting A SHIT LOAD of tanks and I mean A SHIT LOAD.

The map "Afghan" on MW2 should've been Shadow Company vs Task Force 141 instead.
