This is just Part 1 of a Story/Gameplay video of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom On the PS1.

I just got this game for $5 at my local Play N Trade. I rented it back in the PS1 days, and have wanted it ever since.

This footage is mostly Story, with a little of the flight gameplay at the end. You'll see a number of recognizable actors in this game (including John Rhys-Davies who voiced Gimli in The LOTR movies, and has been in a number of games over the years).

This was my introduction to the popular Wing Commander series. The game starring Mark Hamill, is essentially an interactive movie/Space Combat game. A lot of the early uses of Full Motion Video were big experiments that really didn't have much to their gameplay. Most of them played like Dragon's Lair. This game was a great example of how to integrate FMV into the gameplay to not only tell a story (of which the character has some control over the plot turns), but to integrate FMV into the gameplay. This series has a big cult following (mostly amongst PC games), and for it's time Wing Commander IV was the most expensive game ever made with an estimated 12 million dollar budget which was huge for it's time.

This game integrates plot into the gameplay the right way IMO. I always say Gameplay is way more important than story, but when they integrate gameplay elements into the story, it makes the story part of the gameplay. It doesn't go as in-depth as it could be, but it's definitely better than just simply watching a cutscene.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is now available on the US PlayStation Store.

Here's an interesting read about the game:

  • ive never seen these kinds of cutscenes in a game before

  • @kickercaster18 They paid big money to make the game, and get professional actors, so it looks like it paid off when it comes to quality. When it comes to sales, I'm not sure if it paid off or not.

  • This game looks really entertaining. Is that the actor who played Biff in Back to the Future?

  • @seanvan331 I believe so yes.

  • I miss these games. Maniac, in particular, was always great, but the entire cast played their parts to perfection.

  • HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY, MARK HAMILL, AND THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE!!!

  • are you sure this a game? just watching the cutscene seems more of a movie than a game.

  • Star Wars meets Back to the Future :)

  • @teh2Dgamer is the entire game in small screen?

  • HOLY SHIT, IT'S FUCKING MARK HAMILL?? HAHA luke skywalker yo

  • haha linderman from heroes is in this eh?

  • I used to play this alot when i was younger. Both Heart of the tiger and Price of Freedom had fantastic stories and characters. Prophecy did a good job too, but i wish they'd kept Blair as the main character.

I would recommend anyone who finds this game interesting to check out the DVD-version that was released for the PC.

  • Last game I remember that have so nice made story movies was Black. For games that have totally crappy cut scenes I recall Disruptor.

Anyway, thanks for such nice gameplay.
