id say its beatles, stones, kinks, yardbirds, who - no particular order but i think the yardbirds and kinks are left out. ray and dave davies, jeff beck, jimmy page, eric clapton are all top tier.

Wow, I never heard this. I liked it immediately. Sill original - fascinating. I was never a big Kinks fan - but that may be because I have been exposed to the wrong stuff. I will have to explore further - the same way I did when I discovered The Beatles were MUCH more than just "I Want to Hold Your Hand"

JUST found out about this song, having looked up Rubber Sould (album, Beatles) in Wikipedia. This was recorded not later than July 1965, so it's some months AHEAD of Rubber Soul !

@indiansbleeding, Top comment, I agree the top British bands are The Who, The Stones, The Beatles and The Kinks.

Well, I did NOT listen to any of their later stuff in depth. I have a double CD best of, and the second disc is all post 60s, and I didn't find a single song on that one that I found memorable.
Compare any Beatles CD to any (early) Kinks CD. Listen to the sound.
Which band sounds as if recorded in a garage?
See?!

a garage band?
cmon mate, im a garage rock fan meself, but truth is you can hardly call the kinks merely a garage band after listening to any of the things they've put out after 66, can you?

Excellent DJ!
The Kinks are excactly that - a garage band, especially when compared to the grand production of the Beatles.
Some people like them better for that reason, so why deny it?!

I'm just writing a paper on "Norwegian Wood" and I'm discussing if The Beatles -and more particularly George- were quickly drawn to Indian sounds thanks to bands like The Kinks and The Yardbirds. Check out " Heart Full of Soul", that although doesn't use a sitar, they did try to imitate the sound with Jeff Beck's crazy licks ;-)
The Beatles DID use the sitar for the first time in a pop record, however. This song uses a indian drone.
Agree that the Kinks are way underrated. This song did inspire the Beatles with the eastern sounds of India. The Kinks are definately the in the top four of British Bands along with the Beatles, Stones, and the Who.

No question about it. Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who are the "Ivy League" of the 1st wave of British bands--with staying power.
