One of the Big Guns

I waited forever for the heavy artillery to go off, and the film doesn't do it justice. It was a heavy boom you could feel in every bone, even when we were offshore on the lake during later actions.

The guns used in re-enactments are little 3-6 and 8 pounders. The French had 42 pounders and giant mortars at the real battle! There are a few around, but none are considered safe to fire. Visit West Point and you'll see some!

I believe it! Even from my distance (and farther, later) it was still a bang felt in the very depths of my bones. I can't imagine the sound of the large ones.
