In 1974 Bernard Herrmann arranged a suite from the film score he composed for director Henry Levin's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959) which was based on the Jules Verne novel. He recorded the suite in London conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra. The suite was the first of four suites on the London Phase 4 album THE FANTASY FILM WORLD OF BERNARD HERRMANN. The suite contains the cues "Mountain Top and Sunrise", "Prelude", "The Grotto", "Salt Slide", "Atlantis", "The Giant Chameleon and the Fight", "The Shaft and Finale".

The artwork for the cover of the LP is the work of artist Richard Kriegler.

  • Where did you find this soundtrack.i saw it as a child but absorbed it as a teen and watch it every year on the 23 of December for the strange reason that i saw it on that date in 1978 and like a tradition i view it every year. What a wonderful movieThey just dont make them like that anymoe and fox needs to give it the royal treatment on blu-ray,the treatment it deserves. Its a safe and innocent moveie to watch in todays world. What a great experience.

  • @spyderwebz2112---I bought the LP way back in 1974. The LP cover photo in the video is scanned from my vinyl LP jacket. You should be able to find a copy in cd format by doing an internet search for "The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann". The catalogue info is: London Records UDCD 656. You might even be able to find the original vinyl LP.

  • Amazing score. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • Thanks for posting this. After 35 years I've just realised that Todd Rundgren based his "Communion with the Sun" directly on this magnificent work!
