I got this instrument just a bit over 3 years ago, a yirdaki made by Dhalinybuy-based Gurraramawuy and painted by Djalu's wife's (Dopiya's) sister, Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.
In that time, Gurraramawuy - one of the most consistently outstanding yirdaki craftsmen from eastern Arnhem Land and an all-round good guy, has passed away - may he be rested in peace, and Nyapanyapa has risen from artistic obscurity to national recognition with her 2008 win in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in the 3 dimensional works category.
Nyapanyapa has continued to receive critical acclaim, with several group and solo exhibitions around Australia in 2008 and 2009, and major collecting institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of NSW acquiring her works.
Anyway, a pretty rare and awesome combination I reckon of art and sound, an instrument made by one of the greats who should have been a lot better known internationally, and artwork by an unconventional quirky elderly Yolngu lady who now enjoys collectible status in the art world.
