Last year, the vice chancellor of the University of Auckland offered academic teaching staff a 4 percent pay rise, but it came with some costly hooks. So academic members of the Tertiary Education Union (TEU) turned down the offer, insisting that we would prefer no pay rise at all rather than surrender important conditions which enable us to do our job.
TEU academics have tried a range of a low-level actions over the last five months but throughout that time the VC has changed his position very little. Over the next month, TEU members are planning to escalate our industrial action by ceasing to cooperate with internal administrative requirements, refusing to comply with PBRF reporting, and striking for at least one day.
