  • Picking would be scruggs style of playing with finger picks she is frayling the strings in a downward stroke and plucking with her thumb the top string.

  • Frailing/clawhammer some mountaineers called it 'rapping' because of the percussive right hand tecnique

tomatoes tomahtos but I'd not call it 'picking'

probably regional terms. she's good at it tho

  • @goobshoe

In my old Nashville days, and I imagine it's still the same, musicians were "pickers". There were/are guitar pickers, piano pickers, drum pickers, etc. I'm sure that's the way the term is being used here.

  • @qpwillie Negative, qpqillie, it's frailing, not picking.

  • @goobshoe

I'm curious about what you think "picking" is.

    She's picking the banjo.

  • There is no picking here, but the title instates so. What gives??!

  • Strangely, I'm told in the UK "clawhammer" means more like Travis picking a guitar, not like this. I'm not sure which meaning comes first, but I think the US meaning makes more sense why it's called clawhammer.

  • It's called clawhammer because you make your right hand into a "claw" (like holding a credit card in your palm). "Hammer" because instead of strumming strings across the neck, you "hammer" down toward the neck, snapping the nail of your middle or index finger past the string and (almost) into the fretboard or head (depending on where you like to hold your right hand.) The thumb picks up a string, usually the high drone string, on your hand's way back up.

  • I always thought it was called clawhammer because the thumb is like a hammer and the fingers form a claw...i dunno both make sense.

  • Nice........I love her style
